IN MEMORIAM ~ Les Wallace

Les Wallace

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our dear friend and colleague Leslie C. Wallace, Realtor, Broker, GRI, on Saturday, May 31, 2014. Following unexpected emergency hospitalization on Friday, May 23, Les underwent surgery for removal of a malignant brain tumor the next day at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. Further tests revealed extensive inoperable cancer in other parts of his body. The family brought him to the peaceful setting of the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan on Friday, May 30. He passed away peacefully at 6:41 a.m. on Saturday, May 31.

Les Wallace has served our company faithfully and selflessly since 1997, facilitating the transactions of hundreds and hundreds of clients during his long tenure with our company. A veteran of the U.S. Army, his sense of order, learned from his many years of service as a military policeman and Master Sergeant (E8), was a priceless asset to our company in his various roles as Facilitator of Inspection Resolution, Technology Supervisor, Managing Broker, Supervising Broker, and Internal Auditor. During our company’s most recent State-regulated audit, the Kansas Real Estate Commission commended Les for excellence in model recordkeeping.

In 1999, Les held our company together when our son Mark Weis, M.D., was stricken with a malignant tumor. My husband Jerry, our daughter Stephanie, and I dropped everything, leaving immediately to be with our son and his young family in another state. At that time Les not only helped us with our business but also, as a two-time survivor of cancer, he served as a positive model of guidance and encouragement to all our family. We are eternally grateful for his leadership with the business and for his encouraging model in helping our son overcome the negative prognosis to return to good health.

During his 17 years’ tenure with our firm, Les Wallace filled the need of most every niche in our real estate company. Trained and skilled in technology, he supervised our mechanical infrastructure and developed custom software systems unique to our company. He served as internal auditor for many years and as Supervising Broker from 2005-2007. Following a third bout with cancer and surgery, he returned to the company as Managing Broker late in 2007, a duty he filled faithfully and with excellence until Thursday, May 22, 2014.

With Les Wallace, there was no compromise. Every file had to be perfect, every contract had to be reviewed to his satisfaction, every document had to be in its proper place, and it had to be escrowed in a timely manner according to State license law. If anything or anyone was not in order, the agent soon knew about it. The word soon got around to new agents, “Don’t mess with Les!”

This highly-disciplined pragmatist contributed greatly to the success of hundreds and hundreds of real estate transactions through the years. He was “a no-nonsense kind of guy” but his tough outer crust belied his heart of gold. His honesty and integrity meant everything to him, as did his family. His standards were impeccable, and those standards protected us all. His love was a “tough love”, which not only made our company better, but it also made us better people.

We will go on, and our standards will be maintained….but Les Wallace will be dearly missed.

May He Rest In Peace with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ In His New Home…In Heaven.
